The season of summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere! The Summer Solstice occurs on June 21st, 2019. Simultaneously occurring with the Solstice is the sun’s entry into the zodiac sign of Cancer, which rules home and family. Cancerians feel secure when material needs are met.
Jupiter is currently retrograding in Sagittarius. In contrast to Cancer’s emphasis on home, Jupiter in Sagittarius is connected to travel, exploration, and adventure. While Cancer needs to feel provided for, Jupiter is more altruistic and generous. With Jupiter in its dominion sign, even in retrograde, an urge to get up and go somewhere will be prominent!
The Universe Wants You to Hit the Road
The combination of these seemingly opposite Zodiac signs in the Summer Solstice chart naturally leads to the concept of the road trip. Road trips keep us closer to home base (Cancer) while allowing us to explore and expand our horizons (Sagittarius). Consider Cancerian values for a moment.: material items are a blessing. Next, consider the Sagittarian approach: we all know that we cannot take sentimental items with us when our time on Earth is complete.
When one raises his or her vibration and utilizes time, talent, and treasure, the Universe responds by giving us abundance in both the spiritual and material realms. Blessings reward and encourage us to continue sharing our talents. It is when we feel spiritually depleted that we tend to reverse the natural order, seeking the material blessings first out of desperation, as illustrated in the following analogy.
Losing Your Way
Imagine a group of travelers has stopped at a popular tourist attraction on a road trip. This attraction is not their final destination. Each of them have differences of opinion on what to see at the attraction sideshows. The individuals consent to meet up in about a half hour, allowing each to venture solo and see to their unique preferences. One member of the group gets distracted. A show catches her attention and is so thrilling that she spends over an hour watching it.
Her friends are annoyed, waiting for her while she wastes valuable travel time. They nearly panic as they call her cellphone, wondering where she may be. The distracted group member finally shows up, apologizing that her phone was shut off. The entire group is back on the road. The group majority remains perturbed, to say the least. Was the extra time at the wayside attraction really worth it for the tardy member, now that her peers are upset?
The example of the distracted member who forgot the group boundaries illustrates what happens when one becomes overly focused on materialism. A person can think, “That new car will get me happiness!” or “If I get a large diamond engagement ring from my boyfriend, then I will be satisfied!” rather than focusing on Spirit first and letting the rest come in due time.
When one obtains happiness through spiritual fulfillment, the material items proceeding from them are icing on the cake. That is the way it is meant to be. Having it the other way around ultimately leaves a person feeling chronically empty, like someone who lives on a junk food diet. After the instant gratification is gone, there is little else to sustain a good feeling.
How Do We Achieve Balance?
Again, I’ll use the Zodiac to illustrate. The last sign of the Zodiac is Pisces. Pisces is the sign that lends its traits to the twelfth house of an astrological natal chart. Neptune, the natural ruler of this sign, happens to go retrograde in Pisces on the day of the Summer Solstice this year. The five-month long Neptune Retrograde season is a great time to review methods in our lives that we use to enhance our spirituality and faith, such as dreams, visions, and meditation practices.
By contrast, Taurus is the sign that governs material possessions. Taurus is the natural ruler of the second house in a natal chart. The second house rules money, beauty, and the tangible elements of home such as real estate. Taurus is sometimes tied into religious practices in the form of traditions and rituals, as it is associated with the Hierophant card in Tarot. These religious traditions attempt to give a tangible reflection on spiritual principles, but in no way replace the principles themselves.
Since the number twelve is greater than two, the logical conclusion is that as long as we focus on the prize of spirituality, our material needs will all be taken care of. Chasing the “Two” first results in much more work to get to “Twelve.”
Spirit is the
pinnacle of our existence. Everything else supports development of
Spirit. If done in the proper balance, pursuing levels below the twelfth
are never wrong or bad. It is only when the ultimate focus of
spirituality is thrown out the window that the lower levels become moot.
